Basic Residential Roof Designs and Their Features

Learning about some of the common and popular roof types can help you make better decisions about your roof replacement. Certain roof materials match certain roof types, so making the right choices can boost your home’s curb appeal.

Dior Construction, one of the top residential roofing contractors in our area, explains more:

Hip

A hip roof has a gentle pitch on all four slopes, one on each side. Although it is more complicated to construct than other roof types it is also more durable. Its four-sided design also adds wind resistance and hip roofs typically require fewer repairs than other roof types. However, hip roofs need certain kinds of roof vents to work properly. You can find hip roofs in Mediterranean or French-inspired homes. Asphalt shingles, tile and clay work well with hip roofs.

Gable

Gable roofs are the most popular kind of roof design. They have two slopes and their roof ridge extends along the length of the home. The sloped edges are called gables while the lower, level edges of the roof are called eaves. An experienced roofing installation company can easily install a gable roof. Colonial and Cape Cod homes can have gable roofs. Good roof materials for gable roofs include wood shakes, slate and asphalt shingles.

Mansard

Mansard roofs were invented by the French when people began to be taxed by the height of their building as measured to the roof eave. Mansard roofs look unique because they appear to be a combination of a flat roof and steep slope roof. The upper part of the roof is pitched at a low angle, while the lower slope is very steep. Mansard roofs also usually have dormers. The pitch and design of mansard roofs allow for increased usable space in a home. You can easily use the attic space for storage.
