Tasks That You Can Do to Extend Your Roof’s Service Life

Roof repairs and maintenance are best left to professionals. However, there are a few tasks that you, the homeowner, can do that can help extend your roof’s service life. In today’s post, local roofing installation company Dior Construction shares a look at what these tasks are.

Keep an Eye Out for Leaks

It’s important to keep in mind that a leaking roof is always indicative of a bigger problem, therefore you should never ignore signs of a leak, such as water stains and high indoor humidity. There are also other signs that you should familiarize yourself with, like clumping insulation in the attic, mold and mildew growth, and visible signs of warping on structural components. There may also be noticeable holes in the roof. The sooner the roof repairs are done, the less required repairs (and the lower repair costs) will be.

Perform Regular Visual Inspections

Scheduled roofing maintenance, conducted by residential roofing contractors, are done every three to five years. Performing annual visual inspections is easy to do, and provides many benefits. It helps keep you aware of your roof’s condition and call for immediate repairs. In addition to keeping repair costs to a minimum, it also helps prevent an unplanned roof replacement.

Performing a visual roof inspection requires no more than a pair of binoculars, and a way to record your findings, be it pen and paper or a smartphone. On a clear day, train the binoculars on the roof and inspect every inch of the surface, keeping an eye out for signs of roofing problems like curling, missing, or damaged shingles. Also, keep an eye out for gaps at the roof’s edge, dislodged or missing flashing flashing, and other indicators of damage to the roof. Lastly, you’ll need to climb into the attic and note signs of roof leaks that we described above.

Know Who to Call in Case of Roofing Emergencies

It’s good practice to keep your contacts list up to date. During a roofing emergency, you have to call your roofing contractor and your insurance provider. The sooner they get to inspect the damage to your roof, the sooner you can get your insurance claim initiated and repair work started.
