Thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) roofing, often referred to as “plastic” roofing, is a single-ply roofing system that’s become one of today’s most popular commercial roofing options. In today’s post, local roofing installation company Dior Construction shares a look at the advantages of choosing TPO for your commercial roof.
What Is TPO?
Single-ply roofing systems typically consist of a flexible membranous layer adhered to a substrate. The top layer is made of adhered or welded sheets that covers the entire roofing surface. It can be fully adhered, mechanically fastened or loose-laid and ballasted. TPO was first introduced in the 1990s as an efficient and cost-effective alternative to PVC (vinyl) single-ply roofing.
A standard TPO membrane is made with three layers: TPO polymer base, scrim (a chemically-bonded reinforcing fabric layer) and the TPO outer layer. Penetrations such as vent pipes are sealed at the base using adhesive and protected by rubber boots, a type of flashing.
Benefits of TPO Roofing
Commercial and residential roofing contractors offer TPO roofing because of the following benefits:
Cost-effective — TPO roofing cost relatively lower per square foot, which can add up to significant savings when covering large roofing areas.
Simple installation — TPO doesn’t require special equipment to install, which can help save on installation time and cost. As described above, you can choose to have the TPO installed fully adhered or mechanically fastened to the substrate, or weighed down using ballast, which gives you flexibility with the labor cost. Seams are fastened using heat, and can be reinforced using adhesive and cover boards.
Durability — TPO’s flexible outer layer gives it resistance against common causes of puncturing and tearing, from moderate foot traffic to pieces of gravel. TPO also has inherent resistance against bacteria and algae, which helps keep the roof clean and prevent buildup that may degrade roofing seams.
Energy efficiency — TPO’s naturally reflective surface helps reduce radiant heat absorption. In addition to reducing the effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, TPO can help you save on indoor cooling costs. When comparing TPO options, look for ones that bear certification from ENERGY STAR®.
