Understanding Standing Seam Metal Roof Profiles

The term “metal roof” can be a bit vague. It is a general term that also covers a broader scope of options, materials and choices. Among the many kinds of metal roofing available, a standing seam has become more popular for both residential roofing contractors and homeowners. As a guide, we’ll discuss more of it here.

What Is Standing Seam Metal Roofing?

In simpler terms, this is a concealed fastener roofing system featuring vertical or trapezoidal legs with flat space in between. It is particularly equipped with a concealed fastener to protect them against harmful elements. Their panels are attached to the roof deck with clamps so there are no holes from nails, minimizing the chance of moisture that would cause leaks and mold growth.

Common Standing Seam Metal Roof Profiles

  • Snap-Lock Profiles. These feature male and female legs that snap together and don’t require hand or mechanical seaming during installation. Any roofing installation company will find this a bit less complicated to install compared to other profile roofs as they don’t require any special tools to join or crimp the seams.
  • Mechanical Lock Profile. Roofs have a male edge with an opposite female edge and are fastened to the roof deck by using a mechanical lock clip that secures the male edge to the roof. Once the panels are connected, a hand or mechanical seamer will be utilized to bend the edges and lock them together.
  • Batten Panel Profiles. These are known to be roll-formed and designed to mimic the more traditional batten roofing system. They are made by having metal panels come together at a fixed point where they’re seamed or fastened together.
